3 Bank Marine Battery Charger: 5 Top Rated Boat Battery Chargers

There is nothing more frustrating for a boat owner than to have to rotate a single battery charger to charge three marine batteries..  If you’re trying to troll on two days in a row, and have three3 Bank Marine Battery Charger NOCO Genius Gen3 30 Amp Marine Battery Charger Front View batteries to charge with a single charger you’re probably out of luck.  Or maybe you even have a 2 bank charger and are just looking to buy a 3 bank marine battery charger to add that additional bank so that you don’t have to charge two of three and then unhook and charge the third battery.  Whatever your situation, there is no doubt that an onboard 3 bank marine battery charger and battery tender can make life much easier while taking better care of your batteries to ensure they last as long as possible.

Many modern smart chargers have microprocessors that control a multi-step charging and maintenance process that often includes recovery and desulphation functions as well prolong the life of your batteries.  By buying a 3 bank marine battery charger you’re ensuring that each battery gets the proper charge and is maintained properly after they are fully charged for peak charge and efficiency.  That also means that if you store your boat during the winter that these smart chargers will maintain the batteries through the winter unattended automatically so that your boat is ready when you are in the Spring.

Make sure you buy a smart 12V battery charger that is fully sealed, waterproof, and designed for the rigors of the harsh marine environment.  This will ensure that your charger lasts a long time keeps on charging year after year.  Also, make sure that your marine battery charger is mountable if that’s what you need.  An onboard charger can be mounted right to the bulkhead making it much easier to use and hook up when you need to either charge or maintain the batteries.

Stormy Marina PictureOur list includes boat battery chargers that meet all the conditions, gets great reviews and are very popular with boaters.  We searched the forums, customer reviews, retail sites, and manufacturer pages to find 3-bank chargers that are rugged enough and designed to weather the tough marine environment while getting the best reviews out there.

Choosing the best onboard 3-bank battery charger from all the available models requires some careful consideration.  Boat chargers can’t be selected in the same way as a regular vehicle battery charger because of the harsher environmental conditions facing marine chargers.

So how do you choose the best onboard marine battery charger for your boat?  We have put together some selection criteria that should help you with your choice.

Environmental Conditions

Moisture is the first and one of the most important environmental conditions that dictate charger selection.  Operating in a marine environment exposes an onboard marine charger too much higher humidity and moisture conditions than automotive chargers.  Most boat battery chargers are moisture resistant, at least to some degree, to prevent damage and ultimately premature failure.

Even though your charger won’t be directly exposed to water because of its mounting location, it’s a good idea to get a fully waterproof model to be prepared for the worst conditions.  If you’re operating a small fishing boat, your risk of direct exposure to water is much greater and you should definitely consider getting a fully sealed and waterproof model.Yacht Picture 1

Your Battery Specifications

The battery specifications that you need to be concerned with are your boat battery’s chemistry, amp-hour rating, discharge rate tolerance, and voltage.

Need a car battery charger?  Take a look at some of the best in these articles:

Battery Chemistry

Right at the top of the list is your boat battery chemistry.  Your marine battery is most likely a hybrid model designed for the dual purpose of starting the motor and providing “house” service.

Discharge Rate

True marine batteries are designed to be deep cycle batteries that can tolerate discharge rates of to 50% and are usually much heavier than automotive batteries.  A marine deep cycle battery is not the same as a starting or automotive battery which experiences discharge rates of 50% or less thanks to an alternator.  A regular car battery charger would have problems dealing with the needs of a deep cycle marine battery.

Battery VoltageBoat Image 3

Your marine charger needs to provide the voltage that each battery requires.  Most marine batteries are 12V and for multiple batteries should be connected in parallel.  If they are connected in serious then you will need a higher voltage depending on how many batteries you have.  It is not recommended to connect marine batteries in series because the charging will be unbalanced and ultimately will reduce the life of all the batteries in the series.  You also lose the advantage of a multi-bank charger which can take care of each battery independently and ensure each has the longest life possible.

Considering a compact jump starter for your boat or car?  We have the scoop on all of them in these articles:

Smart Chargers

Smart chargers have been around long enough that they are incorporated into most multi-bank products.  They have built-in microprocessors that are capable of running a program that automatically charges the batteries and then converts to maintenance, trickle charger, float or tending mode to keep them charged until you’re ready to use them without overcharging and without attention from you.  They can also incorporate safety features like reverse polarity protection and the ability to detect the state of the batteries and adjust output automatically for each battery.

Battery Banks

This article considers some of the best 3-bank marine battery chargers which are used for three-battery systems.  Your batteries can be configured in a variety of ways to handle your specific3 Bank Marine Charger Trolling Motor Fishing View electrical needs.  Battery chargers with multiple banks greater than 3 are also readily available and function in the same way, but as you might expect, cost more.  Some multiple bank chargers can handle a number of batteries equal to or less than the number of banks.  Most on our list fall into that category, but not all.  If you need that flexibility, make sure the charger you buy is equipped to handle that situation.  Your batteries might not all be exactly the same voltage.  Make sure you match the voltage to your charger.  For example, if you have three batteries that need charging such as a 12V battery for starting and two 12V batteries in series to power a 24V electric motor, you should purchase a 3-bank multi-voltage that has provision for both 12V and 24V outputs.

Battery Amperage

What amperage battery charger should you buy?  A quick calculation used commonly is to determine the amp-hour rating of your batteries and add those together.  Then multiply that numb er by 10% to get the amperage needed.  So in the case of three 105 amp-hour batteries, you would need approximately 10% of 315 amp-hours or 31.5 amps.

There you have it.  Several criteria you can use to select your onboard marine battery charger.  Read on to see 5 great 3-bank chargers that definitely deserve your consideration.
